About

This is where I tell stories that are meaningful to me; often, but not always, these stories involve food. It’s also where I keep my favorite recipes, the ones I’ve cooked again and again and finally decided to measure out and write down, so I can find them when I need them—and of course share them. In past lives I’ve worked in magazines, restaurant kitchens, and as a roving personal chef. I’ve spent time in the wine world and picked grapes in Burgundy. Currently, I’m at work on freelance writing and recipe development projects, as well as a book about my grandmother’s 30-year career as a food writer in mid-20th century Virginia—ask me about her amazing archives! I recently earned my Master’s degree in Food Studies from New York University, where I studied the systems and culture around the food we eat, as well as gaining a foundation in nutrition and food history.

For the past 17 years I’ve also been raising three growing humans. They, more than anything, have made me realize keenly the importance of documenting and preserving traditions, as well as putting into practice life choices that are more sustainable on all levels. I care most deeply about food and stories that are healing to the soil, the planet, the body, the community.

I live in Brooklyn, NY but dream of a rural future in which I’ll have chickens, an orchard, woods for foraging, and a teaching kitchen. Feel free to reach out at claibornemilde@gmail.com
